1986.9.28 - Description of lawsuit to resolve ownership of cemetery

Clipping from newspaper (publication title and date unknown), describing discovery (in February) and attempted disposition of a pre-Civil War cemetery on property owned by the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA) between Union and Lincoln streets. The article describes ownership of the property by Booker, Camm, Massenburg, and Sinclair families, and legal proceedings to acquire the cemetery, including a hearing scheduled for July 2. The property was likely the Harbor Square Apartment site, acquired by HRHA in the late 1960s.

March 12, 1996 memorandum from Deputy City Attorney Sally James Andrews to the chairman, school board members, and superintendent of the School Board of the City of Hampton regarding the case of Georgia Nelson v. School Board of the City of Hampton. The body of the memo states that the Virginia Supreme Court has affirmed Judge Overton's decision to grant the School Board summary judgment in the case. Clerk of School Board Jerome M. Sand[f]ord and Girard Chambers, Jr. are cc'd on the memo.

Girard Chambers was used as a reference to confirm some information. Unsigned. Dated April 21, 1979.

Document, consisting of twenty-five pages, from the Elizabeth City County court records titled "Chancery File #21." The document refers to "Morton v. Burke et als," a legal dispute over "breach of agreement on sale of BURKE'S land sold to T. TABB & H. C. WHITING after an agreement to sell to WILLIAM PORTER of Bridgeport Conn- represented by SAM W. MORTON of Washington, DC." Includes evidence and testimony relevant to the dispute. Last page contains a note that reads, "PS- There is a Plat 2 Wm S. Howard's 'Bates Land' in Survey Book #1 p. 194 Notes p. 162 (Wm. Semples)." Unsigned. Dated 1877- 1878.
