Smith describes Hawkins Zouaves at Rip Raps (Fort Wool), refusing service until receiving back pay, military discipline, Smith's brother William, and romantic interest Miss Frances A. Wyer in Massechussetts. Letter is written on stationery with patriotic letterhead, showing Union flags and the slogan "Protect It."
