Title Roma collection
Collection Roma Collection
Object Type Fonds
Description/Scope & Content Materials collected by former Syms-Eaton Museum curator John Mitchell, for his research on the dirigible Roma and her design, crew, and history. The collection especially includes notes, photographs, and documents relating to the aircraft's mechanical problems, its crash at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot (site of present-day Norfolk International Terminal) on Feb. 21, 1922, and memorials to the crew. The collection includes several original photos, many copy prints of original photos, newspaper clippings, typed transcripts of documents, and manuscript and published forms of Mitchell's articles and booklets.
Admin/Biographical History John Mitchell was curator of the Syms-Eaton Museum in the 1970s. The Roma was one of his primary research interests. Materials were gathered by John Mitchell for research purposes, likely in advance of publication of "The Army Airship Roma" by the Syms-Eaton Museum in 1973. Mitchell seems to have acquired original and copied materials from crew members' families, and copies from several repositories.

Related units of description To view materials related to the Roma not part of this collection, use "Dirigibles/Airships (incl. Roma)" link in Topics field. Materials relating to Lt. Ambrose V. Clinton were collected separately by John Mitchell; see 1984.60.0.

When this collection was initially organized in 1987, it included several photographs found to have been from the Syms-Eaton Museum collections rather than acquired by John Mitchell for his research. These items have been removed and restored to their original status. See notes in individual object records where prints have been removed from folders containing multiple copies of an image. When folders contained only the Syms-Eaton copy of an image, no catalog record has been entered: for 1987.18.83, see 1960.5.12; for 1987.18.84, see 1960.5.13; for 1987.18.85, see 1960.5.11; for 1987.18.86, see1960.5.10; for 1987.18.89, see 1960.5.14.
